I don't think the music was always bad in The Lost Weekend, nor do I blame the use of the theremin for that. Actually, I wasn't sure that's what was being used, though I do know about it. The coolest physics professor ever brought it up in class a year ago, actually. If they were a little cheaper to make/buy and I was a little less lazy, I might have made/bought one, actually, because I think they're just neat. It's been awhile since I've seen The Day the Earth Stood Still {though since I've seen Army of Darkness quite a few times, I should go back and do so}, so I didn't have a problem with that imagery popping up, though you're right, it does bring to mind vague old sci-fi thoughts - but I didn't find that distracting. {My dad loves old sci-fi and monster movies, so I've naturally seen a bunch.} Really, it was the use of the sweeping grand orchestral arrangements that just got to be a bit much sometimes. Not always, to be sure; sometimes the music worked nicely. But the music was used in a very melodramatic way sometimes, which didn't always strike me as the best choice. {Melodrama does NOT equal bad, in and of itself. Just as Realism [the style, not the vaguely defined references] does NOT equal good. My theater history prof would be proud.} Aside from bringing a powerful message in a very honest way {honest being your word, which I find particularly well-chosen...I may steal it for use in discussions of whether plays/art in general is effective, since a general term for that is hard to find that can apply across styles}, it's actually a pretty good example of the mixing of theatrical styles. It seems fundamentally Realist to me, but like I said, the music is Melodramatic. Additionally, the scene with the performers turning into coats and the scene with the mouse and bat fit Expressionism {single person's [usually distorted] perspective, among other things}. There are also some really neat moments that are in and of themselves blended forms. For example, the image of the light coming up through the bottle hidden in the lamp is at once "realistic" in that a real situation like that would probably look somewhat similar and non-Realist in that it becomes about the way light looks, how that reflects on the world/worldview, and so on. {Not quite sure which non-Realist style it fits best, but Expressionism with it's single character's perspective comes to mind.} As for being "over the top," if it was, I didn't think it was in a bad way - it didn't stick out like a sore thumb anywhere, I mean. Overall, quite a good movie. And incidentally, you don't have to apologize for what you write me. It's a pleasure and an honor to hear from you, always.

It is likely you've heard it before, but the Impossible Dream done by Matt Monroe has always moved me. The song itself is great, but he is the only singer I've known to do it justice.
